PR1 FVN - Casal de S. Simão Schist Path Descent to the Fragas
The Casal de São Simão Schist Path is 4.9km long and develops around that Schist Village. It passes through the Fragas de São Simão and its river beach and the settlements of Além da Ribeira, Ponte do Brás Curado, and Saonda. Along the Ribeiras de Alge and do Fato, rich in riparian vegetation, you can observe ancient channels that transported water to the watermills. The route has a variant (PR 1.1) that, by shortcutting to Além da Ribeira, where watermills still grind cereals, shortens the distance to a total of 2.7km.

Tips and suggestions
The Casal de São Simão Schist Village has practically only one street. It is located on one of the flanks of the quartzite ridge that gives rise to the Fragas de São Simão and has the oldest temple in the municipality of Figueiró dos Vinhos. The village stretches along a ridge almost parallel to the course of the Ribeira de Alge. The entrance is at the highest end, and the settlement ends where the slopes made continuation of the streets difficult. In this village, there is a new collective spirit made up of people who restored homes with their own hands. They are new villagers who came from the city and brought new life to these parts. Every weekend, whenever possible, they gather in each other's houses and help each other with meals, work, and socializing. In the water streams abundant here, full of ancient water channels and mills, witnesses of a past human occupation, it is still possible to find some patches of the region's original flora, characterized by the presence of azereiros, royal fern, and female fern, shaded by holm oak, alder, dogwood, and elderberry. The cork oak, chestnut, and laurel forests survive on the slopes in the Fragas de São Simão area. As for fauna, the presence of the yellow-spotted salamander, Lusitanian salamander, Iberian frog, dipper, water blackbird, heron, and black redstart is noted. Signs of the existence of otters are easily found in these waters. Among the vegetation hide many mammals, especially fox, genet, badger, wild cat, pine marten, and weasel.
