The fortress was at its most flourishing between the 1st century BC and 1st century AD. This is evidenced by the many ceramic and iron objects found here, as well as gold ornaments. Although there is little evidence of Dacian life, legends of Dacian treasure hidden by Decebal in various places near the fortress have made a significant contribution. Inside the fortress, traces of iron-working workshops or traces of a system for capturing, filtering and storing water have been discovered.
The sacred area at Sarmizegetusa Regia is the most complex and well-preserved temple area of any Dacian fortress. The seven sanctuaries discovered here have - through their arrangement of stones, shape or other details - sparked much controversy about their usefulness and use. To date, historians have not completely agreed on these issues.
A peculiarity of Sarmizegetusa Regia (like other Dacian fortresses) is that it did not have a necropolis.
The fortress fell after the Roman conquest. The walls of the fortification were altered and gradually the fortress was abandoned.
