Kuhsteig – Krummbach saddle - Krummbachstein
The upper Krummbach valley was formerly used as summer pasture, and cattle is said to have been driven up from the Höllental valley via the Kuhsteig. Today, grazing only takes place above the Krummbach saddle and there is no more cattle driving from the Höllental. For this reason, the Kuhsteig is in danger of being forgotten and gradually overgrown, which would be a real loss because it is very varied and truly impressive in terms of landscape.
The effects of natural forces sometimes take particularly dramatic forms here: while the lowest end of the Kuhsteig today presents itself as a deeply eroded water channel, just before it a hunting stand has become a "Tiefsitz" after the Krummbach carried thousands of cubic meters of debris into the valley and deposited it there.
In contrast, the ascent from the Krummbach saddle to the Krummbachstein is downright charming. The rocky-wild side of Krummbachstein is then experienced on the descent, where the deep views into the Krummbach valley and towards Kaiserbrunn are breathtaking again and again.

Safety information
This route has no particular safety risks.
The Kuhsteig is already quite overgrown in its lowest section, and in the middle zone deadwood repeatedly blocks the path: tracking and pathfinding skills are therefore required.
Tips and suggestions
Not far from Kaiserbrunn also begins an unmarked ascent to Schneeberg.Roadbook
From the parking lot in Kaiserbrunn, follow the signpost "Naturfreundehaus Knofeleben" and walk past the water supply museum upstream. Where the marked path turns right into the forest ("Miesleitensteig"), continue straight ahead to a gate. If this is not open, there is a large pass-through in the fence right next to it. Pass a game feeding area and follow the forest road via a double hairpin bend to its end at a large floodplain, where the Krummbach has deposited tons of debris, partially burying a hunting stand ("Tiefsitz", see photo gallery). A ditch branches off to the right here; follow it, initially pathless in a deeply cut water channel (formerly the Kuhsteig), then around a bend to the left and uphill. At another hunting stand, the erosion channel ends and the Kuhsteig becomes visible. Follow the path, soon through a short, very dense young forest section, and thereafter repeatedly heavily overgrown and encroached by young trees as you continue uphill. If the path is not visible in the dense vegetation, stay approximately in the middle of the ditch and continue until a track becomes visible again. Higher up you reach a flat channel with dense leaf litter on the ground and from there the steep ascent to a scree field, where you initially keep left during the ascent to reach the foot of the cliff, then right and diagonally uphill into the scree (path traces), continue upwards, and about halfway up the slope turn left again to the rocky edge where the path becomes clearly visible again. From there continue uphill and diagonally left into a channel in the forest. Here, you can still partly recognize the bends of the old alpine pasture road and follow them uphill to a flat section characterized by numerous fallen crosswise trees, which you mostly pass on the left. Stay as much as possible in the middle of the channel, which bends slightly right, and follow the path traces and increasingly also cairns to a saddle in the forest. Here begins a clearly visible path that leads in a long traverse under the rocks and later into the upper Krummbach valley. At a fork take the right path uphill, which soon flattens again and then descends to the forest edge in the Krummbach valley, which you cross in a straight line through very dense and tall herbaceous vegetation, and on the other side climb about 50 meters over a steep embankment in the clear forest until you meet a clearly visible path (the upper Brettschachersteig), which you follow right uphill. Soon you reach the valley floor again at a clearing and walk a few meters along the forest edge to meet a signpost indicating the "Wassersteig" to the right. From here continue straight ahead and uphill along the marking in the Krummbach valley until you reach the Krummbach saddle, where a signpost points to the right towards "Naturfreundehaus Knofeleben". You hike uphill on this marked path, pass the Alpenfreunde hut, and finally reach the summit cross at Krummbachstein.
From Krummbachstein, follow the signposts again leading to "Naturfreundehaus Knofeleben", where you can stop for refreshment and rest.
For the descent, head in the direction of "Reichenau/Rax" on a forest road to the first left curve, where the marking branches off to the right downwards into the forest in the direction of "Kaiserbrunn". This path, also called the "Miesleitensteig", initially leads steeply over rocky steps and then through the forest back to the starting point.
