CARTO.AT National Park Kalkalpen Hiking, Cycling & Ski Touring Map No. 401Roadbook
Day 1: Großraming – Ennser Hut approx. 10 km, walking time: approx. 3.5 hours and approx. 850 meters ascent
In the morning you visit the National Park Visitor Center. Together you briefly discuss the itinerary of the route. Via the district Oberplaiß passing the Bamachergut, you go up to the Ennser Hut. (If starting at Großraming train station, the walking time is shortened by almost an hour)
Day 2: Ennser Hut – Almkogel – Gamsstein – Geschwendtalm - Anlaufalm, approx. 16 km, walking time: 6-7 hours, 800 meters ascent
From the Ennser Hut you go in the morning over the Danzersteig to the Gschwendtalm. From the Ennser Hut, you immerse yourself in the sea of forest to ascend over the Danzersteig to the summit of Gamssteinköpfel and Gamsstein. Beautiful panoramic views are repeatedly expected; the ascent to Gamssteinköpfel is a little steeper. After a panoramic view and a view to the Bohemian Forest, you descend to the Gschwendtalm. Strengthened with delicious alpine delicacies, you proceed over the alpine meadow into the forest. After a few minutes the path now branches left towards Brunnbach. Past the National Park education center Brunnbachschule, you finally ascend again over the ruined Kronsteineralm and the farmhouse Rauchgraben to the Kreuzweg junction. Now you go relatively leisurely along the ridge through the forest to the Ortbauernalm. To reach the Anlaufalm, there are now 2 alternatives: Option 1 leads over the Hochkogel with a beautiful view of the National Park Kalkalpen and National Park Gesäuse or Option 2 rather flat around the Hochkogel. Overnight stay at the Anlaufalm.
Day 3: Anlaufalm – Große Klause – Ebenforstalm approx. 14 km, walking time: approx. 6 hours, 800 meters ascent
From the Anlaufalm there are 2 possibilities to hike to the Große Klause. The shorter option leads over the Keixen and takes about 2 hours. The somewhat longer, but scenically very attractive route leads over a ridge to the Große Bach - (surefootedness and a head for heights required!) Next, you proceed over the Triftsteig through the Große Schlucht (surefootedness and a head for heights required!); alternatively, you can also hike through the tunnels of the former forest railway (headlamp or flashlight helpful). From the Annerlsteg, you then continue on the Hintergebirgsradweg (gravel path) to the Klaushütte. Allow about 3.5 hours for this option. From the Große Klause, continue a bit further downstream on the Hintergebirgsradweg to the Rabenbach bridge. You cross this and hike comfortably steadily uphill. In the area below the Klaushof, you have to cross a small stream, which most of the time has no water or does not pose a problem. After the stream crossing, you climb about 150 meters steeply uphill (rope securing). Finally, you reach the forest road and follow it for about 20 minutes on foot to the junction of the themed trail "Cotton grass, alpine pasture, and water sink" below the Ebenforstalm. Following the themed trail, you reach Ebenforstalm in about 15 minutes. Overnight stay at Ebenforstalm.
Day 4: Ebenforstalm – Bodinggraben or Anzenbach
From Ebenforstalm there is now the possibility to descend into the Bodinggraben (approx. 1.5 hours) or over hiking trail 472 towards Reichraming to the Anzenbach parking lot. For the descent into Bodinggraben, it is necessary that a car is parked there (before the start of the 4-day route) for the return trip to Großraming.
