An important landmark from antiquity and one of the most important sights of Rome
.The Colosseum is the largest amphitheatre built in ancient Rome. Since it was built during the Flavian dynasty (around the year 80), it was once called the Flavian Amphitheatre. The name „Colosseum“ comes from a huge statue of the Emperor Nero. The impressive building had room for over 50,000 visitors to watch the gladiatorial fights and animal races organised by the emperors. Thanks to the 80 entrances, the crowds were able to enter and leave the Colosseum in no time. The underground tunnel system for the gladiators and animals is still well preserved today. On one side, the almost 50 m high façade of the building has been completely preserved. The system is still considered a benchmark in the construction of stadiums.
