One of the largest coastal lakes of Lazio, it has a special form and a few small islands floating on its surface
The lake has ist name from the comune of Fondi in Lazio, next to the stunning coastline. With more than 380 hectares, it is one of the largest coastal lakes of Lazio. It is linked with the Tyrrhennian Sea. However, its main characteristic is the lake’s semiccircular form which makes it stand out in the area. Another extraordinary element of Lago di Fondi are the so-called “ballene”, small islands of roots and reeds floating on its surface. In 2006 the lake was declared National Monument and has become a shelter for about 70 species of birds, many of them migratory birds. Besides, you can find here more than 20 species of orchids.
