A múzeum boltjában könyveket, ásványokat és kisebb ajándéktárgyakat is tudtok vásárolni.
A múzeumot eredetileg létrehozó Balatoni Múzeum-Egyesület már 1898-ban megalakult. A kiállítás alapjait kezdetben bérelt termekben mutatták be, és megkezdődött a gyűjtemény gyarapítása. A múzeum neobarokk épülete 1928-ra készült el, az 1930-as években kezdődött el a kiállítási darabok költöztetése. 1936-ban a sümegi Darnay Múzeummal való egyesülésnek köszönhetően jelentősen bővült a gyűjtemény. Sajnos a második világháború alatt, 1945-ben sok értékes darab semmisült meg, amikor a becsomagolt anyagokat vagonokra rakták, és a szállítás során a zalaegerszegi vasútállomáson bombatalálat érte a szerelvényt. A múzeum az 1949-es államosítást követően indult újra fejlődésnek.

- A múzeumot legkönnyebben a Keszthely, Csók István utca buszmegállóból érjük el.
- Szintén közel van a jobb közlekedési kapcsolatokkal rendelkező Keszthely, autóbusz-állomás és a közvetlenül mellette található Keszthely vasútállomás.
