A Schneealpen route for mountain individualists – and all who want to become one…
First: THIS IS NOT A ‘HIKING ROUTE’!
(Keywords: pathless, unmarked, not necessarily comfortable…)
“Sometimes you have to invest a bit in the path” could be the motto of this scenic circular route: the northern ascent leads among other things over a steep clearing that is not necessarily comfortable – but very efficient. Once you reach the forest road leading to the Waxenegg hut, this circular route becomes comfortable.
On the elongated ridge of the Hohe Waxenegg, the view is absolutely impressive irrespective of the relatively low height, and in spring this extensive high pasture turns into a colorful sea of flowers.

Author’s recommendation
This route can be easily extended in the west around Spielkogel and in the southeast around Donnerwand.

Safety information
A good part of this route is pathless, and the entire distance is unmarked. Therefore, you should be somewhat practiced in independently finding a route or path tracks in open terrain. A GPS device with track is helpful.
Tips and suggestions
A very beautiful but long Schneealpen route leads over the Taborsattel to the Donnerwand and further over the Windberg into the Baumtal.
The Waxenegg also has a lot to offer for ski tourers.
After a route, the Jausenstation Leitner or the Freinerhof are recommended for a stop.
Roadbook
First: Since July 2024, the proposal by T.Veiti (2022) has been adopted in the route planning.
From the parking lot, you walk over the bridge and along the Kalte Mürz valleyward. The forest road passes a hunting lodge and winds through the forest. Shortly before the first power line crossing after the hunting lodge, a inconspicuous path branches off uphill to the right at a flat spot on the roadside slope, which is soon marked by cairns in the forest. It goes steeply upward in switchbacks, over a rib with a railing slightly to the left (here yellow marking dots), gradually back to the right, back onto the rib, and along it up to a forest road. Follow this to the right to the next hairpin turn, and then straight ahead to the next left curve, which offers a nice view of Neuwald. Immediately after, a large clearing or old windthrow opens up to the left and up, which you can climb well without a path and steeply, initially along the right edge, further up more in the middle. Occasionally, deadwood or dense undergrowth forces maneuvering, but overall the slope is largely unobstructed. As soon as you see the slope of the next forest road at the top, turn rather left for the exit and reach easily the track that leads right up to the Waxenegg hut. Follow this path uphill to a saddle with barriers, where the electric fence can be opened for passage. Immediately afterward, leave the track and turn left, where a gentle, broad ridge leads up towards Waxenegg, densely covered with flowers in spring. After a first rise, it goes briefly downhill and then up to the Strassberger memorial cross on the other side. The further ascent is gentle and runs directly along the ridge to the highest point of the Hohe Waxenegg (without summit cross).
For the descent to the Taborsattel, go a bit east along the crest from the summit and then descend over a steep meadow at the edge of a light tree stand, until the terrain becomes flatter and you can cross over to the lowest point of the Taborsattel, where the pasture fence has a passage.
On the east side of the fence, descend along the right edge of a deep erosion gully to a narrow flat area, cross the gully here, which often contains a little water, and head diagonally down to the left to a shallow pasture hollow where a cattle trough is located and shortly before it a small red directional arrow on a tree. Then continue descending along the right edge of the water channel below the cattle trough to a terrain threshold where the pasture becomes noticeably steeper again. A fence comes from the left to this pasture and runs down along its edge, where there is a passage in the lowest left corner of the meadow, which you aim for. From this passage, a clear path leads diagonally left to a nearby wooden hut, from where a haul road continues downhill to a forest road. At the forest road, turn left; at a junction where a path goes left uphill, continue straight ahead and descend further; at the next fork in a hairpin turn hold right, thereby reaching the ascent route. In the following right curve, turn left onto the hunting trail, follow this to the forest road in the valley, and then turn left to return to the starting point.
