City tour through San Sebastián de La Gomera
When the island was conquered by Spanish explorers in the 15th century, they found a settlement of the indigenous Guanches at this site. Even before the end of the conquest, the first building was erected: the Ermita de San Sebastián church, which was to give its name to the new capital. To protect against hostile native inhabitants, the defensive tower Torre del Conde was built around 1450, which can still be visited today. In addition, the former count's residence (Casa de la Aguada) and the church Nuestra Señora de la Asunción date from this period. The buildings along Calle Real were constructed in the subsequent period, many of which have remained almost unchanged until today. The harbor of San Sebastián is the gateway to the island of La Gomera. Large ferries anchor there, connecting the island with the neighboring archipelagos of Tenerife, La Palma, and El Hierro.
