A fantastic ski touring route from the Stuben ski area to the Kaltenberg and from there over the Bettlerkar to Langen. Very rewarding both scenically and technically in skiing terms.

The Kaltenberg with its imposing north face is a very sought-after destination in the Arlberg. From the Stuben ski area, you reach it relatively easily via the Maroikopf. Two great descents await on this ski tour. The walk over the Wilde Ebene is very scenic, and the ascent to the Kaltenberg is impressive. The descent over the Bettlerkar deserves 5 stars, as you have over 1500 m of great terrain ahead of you.

    Author’s recommendation

As soon as you have mobile phone reception at the end of the valley, you should organize a taxi, as they often take longer at the end of the day and this can greatly shorten the waiting time.

    Safety information

Caution on the north face of the Kaltenberg. This can be very tricky in föhn conditions and poor snowpack.

    Roadbook

From the Albonagratbahn mountain station, you head a bit west to the skinning area. The ascent to the Maroikopf takes about 45 minutes. This is very busy, but most people descend directly to Langen. However, we descend towards Verwall and skin up again upon reaching the valley floor. Over the Wilde Ebene, you then go through hilly terrain to the north face of the Kaltenberg. The summit is reached in some tight switchbacks, and you enjoy the second summit. After a short descent (about 150 m in altitude), you traverse to the orographic left and climb another 50 m where you reach a small saddle. At this saddle, we put the skis back on and enter the Bettlerkar. A great descent with 1500 m in altitude now lies ahead of us. A dream if the conditions are right.
