Nordwaldkammweg II Tour 13 Svatý Tomáš na Šumavě - Zadní Zvonková
The Nordwaldkammweg is a technically easy hiking trail on the northern ridge of the Mühlviertel, encompassing marked trails in Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic, offering around 14 days of hiking enjoyment.
On day 13, the route descends from Svaty Tomas. The Schwemmkanal is reached at Korunda, where it crosses the continental watershed between the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea. Continuing downhill, we reach the Lipno Reservoir, following it along to the day's destination at the Czech Schwemmkanal.
The Nordwaldkammweg is Austria’s oldest long-distance hiking trail. With its distinctive blue-white ridge marking, it is the successor and part of the ridge path of the Bohemian Forest Association from 1912, which at that time started in Rosenberg an der Moldau and ran along the Czech border through the Erzgebirge and Riesengebirge to Poland.
In 2012, the classic Nordwaldkammweg from Dreisesselberg in Bavaria to the Nebelstein in the Waldviertel was extended by a return route, the Nordwaldkammweg II, which uses the Green Belt of Europe after the fall of the Iron Curtain.
The classic Nordwaldkammweg ended at the Nebelstein after 144 km. It was then extended by the Waldviertel section to the viewing point Mandelstein (874m), and in 2007, as part of the EU-funded Interreg IIIA project "Path construction and hiker information Nordwaldkammweg / Sumavska hrebenova cesta", it was extended by the Waldviertel section to Pyhrabruck. In cooperation with the club of Czech tourists, the Nordwaldkammweg II emerged as a return path through the Green Belt with variant III via the old starting point of the ridge path in Rozmberk an der Moldau.
Day thirteen finally offers the chance to get to know the technical masterpiece Schwarzenberg Schwemmkanal, reaching the point where it overcomes the European main watershed. We also get to know the Lipno Reservoir up close.
Accommodation, details about the connecting paths, as well as the history of the Nordwaldkammweg and the region, can be found in the new Nordwaldkammweg guidebook, which is available online from the Pustet publishing house, in bookstores, at the tourism associations of the Mühl- and Waldviertel, and at some accommodations along the way.
For hiking the Nordwaldkammweg, it is possible to obtain badges. This requires a stamp at the control points in the stamp book along with confirmation by date and signature of the accommodation or tourist office. If no possibility for a stamped confirmation exists, a selfie with a visible date is also accepted. If the hike is interrupted, the control point must be stamped again with the new date.

At Kyselov, halfway along, the Bayrische Au is worth a detour – a remarkable raised bog where the Ice Age relic Spirke can still be found.

News about the Nordwaldkammweg is available from the working group of the NordwaldkammwegRoadbook
On the red-marked road, we leave Svatý Tomáš heading west. This starting path is also bike route 1033 and the nature trail Stezka Svatý Tomáš. At the next building, we leave the road to the left onto a gravel path that continues downhill to the orientation point Růžová Cesta (N48° 38.722', E14° 3.934'). Since our next destination is the Lipno Reservoir, where the old Nordwaldkammweg of the Bohemian Forest Association passed through villages "submerged" by the lake, one could theoretically stay on the red KCT marking towards the orientation point and skip the scenic spot Korunda / Rosenhügel (N48° 38.726', intersection: road to the Lipno Reservoir, L.c. Růžová to Svatý Tomáš, road to Pasečná, road to St. Oswald, canal road to Iglbach) with the watershed sculpture, where the Schwemmkanal crosses the transcontinental watershed.
However, we follow the NWKW II slightly downhill on the yellow marking to the European watershed. This flat area in Korunda is repeatedly used for events. Here the Schwarzenberg Schwemmkanal changes from the Baltic Sea catchment area to the Black Sea catchment area. From Korunda, one can hike on the connecting path V4 via the power sculpture "Connect it" at the border crossing and the customs house to the classic Nordwaldkammweg in St. Oswald near Haslach. A round on the steep-step path Schwemmkanal (path 70) is also highly recommended and enhances understanding of the engineering feats involved in the construction of this wood transport system to Vienna.
According to the Euregio project Nordwaldkammweg / Sumavska hrebenova cesta of 2007, the Nordwaldkammweg II leads from Korunda along the Schwemmkanal over Iglbach, the former federal road B50 (Krumau road) to Sonnenwald and then over the Rotbach lock to the daily destination Zadni Zvonkova (bike path R27). This path is marked in blue and easy to find, as it always follows the Schwemmkanal. Attractions include some locks, artworks, and the Bohemian Forest school near Sonnenwald. At the request of the board of Arge-Nordwaldkammweg member Alpenverein Rohrbach, no new long-distance path should be added in the working area of the AV section Rohrbach; hence, the official Nordwaldkammweg II follows, in deviation from the Euregio project map, the route marked as Nordwaldkammweg III on this map.
We therefore leave the beautiful area of Korunda on bike routes 800 Moldaustausee bike route / 803 Rosenhügel bike route / 805 Wittinghausen bike route downhill to the orientation point Janova cesta (N48° 39.954', E14° 3.869'), where we meet the red marking of Růžová cesta. Unlike the Schwemmkanal, here unfortunately we must accept car traffic until Kyselov. The Kyselov bike route, which is the old federal road B50 (Krumau road), has recently been reopened to car traffic. The red marking accompanies us the rest of the day along the Lipno Reservoir / Údolní nádrž Lipno. We get closer and closer to the Lipno Reservoir. At the orientation point U mostu (N48° 40.344', E14° 4.126'), we turn west on the asphalt road. Soon we stand at the spot where the Lipno Reservoir reaches Austria and therefore at the time of the Iron Curtain a bay with a dam and a bridge had to be built (Rakouska zatoka). To the south, we see from the bridge the nature reserve Bayrische Au. Uphill, we reach the junction point Kyselov rozc. (N48° 41.000', E14° 3.405'). Here begins the connecting path V3 to Oberhaag, from which after the border the forest path (path 40) branches off to the left, showing us the Bayrische Au as a detour. For the botanically interested, it should be noted here that in the center of this raised bog area extending to the Czech border, the Ice Age relic Spirke (Pinus Mugo ssp. Rotundata, also called mountain pine) can be found as a special feature.
From Kyselov rozc. northwards, it is not far to the ferry across the Lipno Reservoir to Dolni Vltavice / Untermoldau and further to Cerna v Posumavi.
We are now finally off the asphalt road and enter the terrain along bike routes 800 / 1033 on a red-marked path. One can stay on this bike route, but it is actually intended to branch off west at the orientation point Racin (N48° 42.568', E14° 1.835') and then again reach the bike route before Predni Zvonkova / Vorderglöckelberg (N48° 43.754', E14° 0.177'). The last stretch goes on the asphalt road towards Schöneben to the junction to Pension Marie at the Schwemmkanal near Zadní Zvonková.
