Nordwaldkammweg II Tour 10 Dolní Přibrání - Eisenhut
The Nordwaldkammweg is a technically easy hiking trail along the northern ridge of the Mühlviertel, encompassing marked trails in Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic and offers about 14 days of hiking enjoyment.
The tenth day on the Nordwaldkammweg leads along the Maltsch to Zettwing on the path laid out by KCT for the Nordwaldkammweg II project. The entry to the Stations of the Cross there is somewhat difficult to find due to tall grass but was better re-marked in 2025. In any case, we must go to Mairspindt and Windhaag bei Freistadt, Pieberschlag, Leopoldschlag, Hiltschen, and then Eisenhut.
The Nordwaldkammweg is the oldest long-distance hiking trail in Austria. With its typical blue-white ridge marking, it is the successor and part of the ridge trail of the Bohemian Forest Association from 1912, which originally started in Rosenberg on the Moldau and led along the Czech border over the Erzgebirge and Riesengebirge to Poland.
In 2012, the classic Nordwaldkammweg was extended from Dreisesselberg in Bavaria to Nebelstein in the Waldviertel by the addition of a return route, the Nordwaldkammweg II, which after the fall of the Iron Curtain uses the Green Belt of Europe.
The classic Nordwaldkammweg ended at the Nebelstein after 144 km. It was then extended by the Waldviertel section to the Mandelstein viewpoint (874m), before in 2007, as part of the EU-funded Interreg IIIA project "Path construction and hiker info Nordwaldkammweg / Sumavska hrebenova cesta," the Nordwaldkammweg was extended by the Waldviertel section to Pyhrabruck. In cooperation with the Czech Tourist Club, the Nordwaldkammweg II was created as a return route through the green belt with variant III via the old starting point of the ridge trail at Rozmberk on the Moldau.
The appeal of the tenth day on the Nordwaldkammweg lies in the alternation between the natural landscape of the Green Belt and the cultural landscape of the Austrian border region. On this day, the border is crossed once on a beautiful old bridge over the Maltsch that has survived turbulent times. Immediately afterward, there are old mills and sawmills along the waterways. Then we reach the highlight of the day, perhaps of the entire Nordwaldkammweg II, with the museum in the Green Belt Center Windhaag. Is there information about the Nordwaldkammweg here? In any case, the Green Belt Center is a checkpoint. After Windhaag, interesting sculptures can be seen on the way to Reisingerberg (archery) and the sacrificial bowl on Leopoldschlägerberg. With the Natura2000 area Maltschauen, we experience the Green Belt also in Austria. After crossing at Waldburg on the 4th day, the old horse railway line Linz–Budweis is reached again on the way to Eisenhut.
Accommodations, details about connecting paths, and the history of the Nordwaldkammweg and the region can be found in the new Nordwaldkammweg guide, which is available online through the Pustet publishing house, in bookstores, at tourism associations in the Mühl- and Waldviertel, and at some accommodations along the route. When hiking in winter, it should be noted that most accommodations have winter closures, presumably also the strategically important Penzion Jeleni Vyhlidka.
There is also the possibility to acquire badges for hiking the Nordwaldkammweg. For this, a stamp in the stamp book along with confirmation with date and signature from the accommodation provider or tourist office is required at checkpoints. If stamping with confirmation is not possible, a selfie (with date visible) can also be used. If the trail is interrupted, the checkpoint must be stamped again with a new date.

Roadbook
At Dolní Přibrání / Untersinetschlag (reference point N48° 38.084', E14° 36.017') the Nordwaldkammweg III branches off from the Nordwaldkammweg II. From Dolní Přibrání the continuing path through the forest to Zettwing / Cetviny is marked in green. This path was marked in 2007 by the KCT as part of the NWKW Euregio project and is now also used by cycling routes. It follows the old towpath in the green belt. Shortly after Dolní Přibrání you reach a high plateau with meadows, from which you have a view to the south of the heights of the Freiwald near Unterwald in Austria. Those who spend the night at Penzion Jeleni Vyhlidka (N 48°37.984', E 14°35.219', checkpoint 14) return at the reference point Nad Malsi (N 48°37.257', E 14°34.802') to the green marked NWKW II.
The green marking runs essentially parallel to the course of the Maltsch / Malse, sometimes along the edge of the steep slope down to the Maltsch, which can then be heard rushing deep below. Once you come very close to it, it would be only a few meters to descend to the river (recommended). At the height of the mountain Na Cepici we come out of the forest and enjoy the green belt around Janova ves with a view of extensive meadows. Having reached the marking point U Cetvin, a short detour on the yellow marking to the church of Zettwing / Cetviny Kostel is worthwhile. Immediately afterwards, at Hammern, you can also cross the border (footbridge next to the old Czech customs house) to the Austrian side, where there is a museum in the old customs guardhouse.
The Nordwaldkammweg II goes shortly before Zettwing / Cetviny (reference point U Cetvin, N48° 36.896', E14° 33.020') left uphill on the yellow marking over a meadow at the Stations of the Cross to the chapel Panny Marie Lurdské (N 48°36.298', E 14°33.613'). The Stations of the Cross were designed by students of an arts and crafts school from Cesky Krumlov / Krumau. Before the border, on the Czech side, there is a memorial stone for a Czech customs officer who was mistakenly shot by two colleagues in 1938. Worth seeing is the old bridge over the Maltsch (N48° 36.213', E014° 33.741'), which forms the border crossing Mairspindt. Just behind it you can see the customs house Mairspindt along the way. We take the path W2, perhaps visiting the old Hofwieshammer (N48° 35.590', E014° 33.766') or the Venetian saw (N48° 35.527', E014° 33.852') and the Felber mill and reach easily ascending the village Windhaag bei Freistadt. The checkpoint is located in the Green belt center (N48° 35.182', E14° 33.716'), where the exhibition about the Green Belt of Europe with a special exhibition on the history of the Nordwaldkammweg should actually be very interesting for hikers on the Nordwaldkammweg. The Green belt center aims to authentically tell exciting stories in a border region as a meeting and information place and to achieve regional value creation with gentle tourism. The Green Belt Center offers a total of 1000 square meters of space for exhibitions and information about nature, history and the future of the Green Belt. Visitors can thus get to know the special features of the border region before setting out on a discovery journey.
Now follows a piece of asphalt road through the village of Windhaag to the south until the newly marked Nordwaldkammweg II together with the bridle path turns right to Schlöglmühle towards the watershed – sculpture path. Slightly uphill, we soon reach the weather shuttle and the sculpture path. 19 granite artworks by the Windhaag sculptor Gerhard Eilmsteiner have been pictorially placed near the “weather shuttle” on the European watershed in the landscape. The chapel on the right with its beautiful view should also be worth a photo.
At the end of the sculpture path we are in Pieberschlag, where the guesthouse Zum Waldlehrpfad invites you to rest. From Pieberschlag the ridge to the Reisingerberg (886m, forest trail, sacrificial bowl, bee tree on the descent, both rather in dissolution, caution at the archery range!) is crossed. Afterwards, there is the possibility to take the path W2 as a detour to the guesthouse Pammer in Mardetschlag. On the Nordwaldkammweg II the Leopoldschlägerberg (879 m) with its beautiful sacrificial bowls is climbed and then Leopoldschlag is reached at the Lias am Berg accommodation. In the village Leopoldschlag (Hafnerhaus, hiking shoe, border land stage) you switch to the hiking trail L2, which leads via Hiltschen / Maria Schnee to Eisenhut. Along the way, the Maltsch / Malše is reached (local hiking trail L2: European protected area Natura 2000, wheelchair-accessible potter's path). Here the Maltschauen offer untouched nature and a viewing station for water buffaloes in the Natura2000 area. Not far from the Nordwaldkammweg II in the village Hiltschen, the new Maria Schnee Church stands along the way, from which you can see the old Maria Schnee church (on the Nordwaldkammweg III) on the Czech side. Remains of the horse railway also stand in Hiltschen.
We stay on the path L2 or on the horse railway path, see a horse railway bridge on the way downhill to Eisenhut, pass the village and reach uphill the Czech border. Over the horse railway path, you could switch to Nordwaldkammweg III towards Trojany (connecting path V10).
