Habsburghaus via Rudolfsteig
Selected alternatives for you
The demanding Rudolfsteig leads from the Höllental along a very scenic ridge (guaranteed impressive views down!) to the Rax high plateau. From there, it continues easily and with a pleasant incline to the cozy Habsburghaus, where we can enjoy the most beautiful view of Schneealm on the Rax from the terrace.

The first part of the Rudolfsteig leads steeply through beautiful forest, but soon the first rocks are reached. From here, there are repeatedly beautiful, sometimes spine-chilling views into the Große Höllental. Particularly charming is the airy rock window on the path, through which one probably would not proceed even without the "Stop" sign. Instead, the path continues never particularly difficult, but in places exposed, along the ridge up to the Rax plateau. Now it goes alternately through open forest, dwarf pine lanes and over beautiful meadows to the Klobentörl and further to the Habsburghaus. So the Rudolfsteig definitely offers plenty of variety.
Author’s recommendation
This route is well accessible by public transport as a crossing with descent via the Kaisersteig or Peter-Jokel-Steig to Hinternaßwald. Fit and fast hikers can do this as a day hike; otherwise, an overnight stay at the Habsburghaus is recommended.

From Vienna (or Wiener Neustadt), Payerbach-Reichenau is very well accessible by S-Bahn, which usually runs hourly. From Payerbach-Reichenau train station, continue by bus to the Weichtalhaus.Directions
By car on the Semmering expressway (S6) up to the Gloggnitz exit, turn towards Gloggnitz there and drive through the town towards Payerbach-Reichenau, Rax. Payerbach is passed. At the end of Reichenau, do not turn towards Prein but continue towards Höllental. Hirschwang is passed. Continue to the large parking lot at the Weichtalhaus (right side of the road).Parking
Best at the large parking lot at the Weichtalhaus. There are some parking spaces directly at the entrance to the Rudolfsteig, but especially on weekends these fill up quickly.Coordinates
