The path runs predominantly through the forest and leads to several stone settings that presumably date from the Bronze Age / Stone Age. Certain astronomical phenomena involving the moon play a special role. The stone avenue of Meisenberg, various menhirs, and the mysterious Hochfels are the main stations. They are complemented by old cobblestone paths of various types. A replica of a cannon entrenchment from the era of the Revolutionary Wars recalls the battles near Fröhnerhof in 1794. At the end, there is a magnificent view of the Donnersberg, with 687 m the highest elevation in the Palatinate.

WATCH OUT! - Campaign for a respectful coexistence in nature

Always behave in a thoughtful, friendly, and considerate manner towards all you meet on the way.

Respect nature, do not destroy plants, and always stay on the paths. Avoid excessive noise and leave the forest before dusk.

Remember a garbage bag for on the way and take your trash back home.

Please always keep your dog on a leash. Other visitors and animals will thank you.

For your own safety, observe all path closures, including on weekends.

Park only in designated parking areas. Leave space for emergency vehicles and agricultural machinery.

Please give priority to agricultural and forestry traffic.

    Author’s recommendation

For the heath in bloom from the end of July to early August, a small detour into the Mehlinger Heide is especially worthwhile. But at any other time of the year, you should not miss the unique landscape.

    Safety information

The paths are natural, with steep sections and trails. The route is not passable with a stroller.

Especially in autumn, care must be taken as the fallen leaves on the ground can conceal unevenness, roots, stones, or holes in the path. After thunderstorms or heavy rain, trees may still fall or branches break off. Especially in adverse weather conditions, natural paths can become muddy and slippery. Not all rocks or precipices are secured with ropes or railings. Surefootedness is required in places. You must expect these types of path impairments when hiking. If you believe that certain sections are not passable for you, you should avoid them.

    NOTE:

We strive to announce all closures caused by forest work or hunting groups on this platform. Nevertheless, there are situations where hiking paths are closed, and we may not have been informed. If you unexpectedly find a path closure or detour, please observe the instructions for your own safety.

    Roadbook

The approximately 12 km long circular route starts at the heath parking lot between Mehlingen and Fröhnerhof. First, it goes along a field path in the direction of the wind turbines, then left to Fröhnerhof. At the first houses, turn right to a reconstructed "cannon entrenchment," which recalls the events during the Revolutionary Wars in 1794. Following the marking further, past a burial mound, you reach the strange stone avenue on the plateau of Meisenberg. Then continue along the "Uhrweg," an old exposed cobblestone road from Roman times, past the so-called stone line down towards the Eselsbachtal valley to a destroyed menhir. Via a comfortable serpentine path, you descend into the Eselsbachtal to the idyllic Schallbrunner pond. There you learn some facts about the forest district, whose rights, nearly 900 years old, are still valid today. Following the Schallbrunner valley, you reach on the left, on a steep unpaved path, the namesake of this circular route, the Hochfels. From there, it is almost flat, passing a menhir, to the western entrance of one of the largest heath areas in southwest Germany, the Mehlinger Heide. At this point, you can decide whether to continue on the official path via the heath experience trail back to the starting point of the route or take a shortcut across the Mehlinger Heide (flowering time August/September). If you choose the shortcut across the Mehlinger Heide following the heath circular route, you will be rewarded at the end of the hike with a magnificent view of the Donnersberg, the highest mountain massif of the Palatinate.

    Equipment

The sometimes steep inclines require sturdy footwear; sufficient provisions should also be packed.

     Generally applies:

    • Sturdy footwear
    • Weather-appropriate clothing
    • Sun and rain protection
    • Sufficient supply of food and drinks as there are not always opportunities to eat or shop available or open.
    • Although the paths are consistently very well marked, it is recommended for safety reasons always to carry a suitable hiking map so that, for example, in case of a thunderstorm or emergency, you can quickly find a safe area.
