Built starting in the 12th century, it is today one of the best preserved privately owned castles in the Alps. More than a thousand years of history intertwine in the evocative spaces of the manor which can be visited with a guide.
In the vicinity of Tassullo, in a panoramic position, surrounded by hills covered with orchards, stands Castel Valer, characterized by impeccable elegance. Its tower, the highest in the province, with its 40 meters high, characterized by an octagonal plan and built in part of imported granite, stands out for its grandeur and particularity over all the other towers in Trentino. HISTORY The name of the manor probably derives, despite an unlikely Roman origin, from the cult of S. Valerio to whom the castle chapel is dedicated. The first news of the history of Castel Valer dates back to 1211, when, owned by the Counts Appiano, it served as a military guard. Once the property of the Coredo family, it was obtained in 1368 by the Sporo family who still hold it today. The successive series of walls designed to contain the growth of the perimeter of the castle follow the octagonal model imposed by the ancient tower and enclose the two series of buildings of which the complex is formed: the oldest, dating back to the fourteenth century, is called Castel di below, while the second, dating back to the sixteenth century, Castel di sopra. In the northern portion of the manor, between the main curtain and the external one, there is the chapel of S. Valerio entirely frescoed by the brothers Giovanni and Battista Baschenis, itinerant painters of Bergamo origin. The frescoes, of great chromatic vivacity, represent San Valerio enthroned flanked by Saints Fabiano and Sebastiano.
