The Festungsberg is the perfect adventure area for families. If you walk past the baroque chapel at Kalvarienberg and continue uphill, you reach the castle hiking trail. This leads visitors to the ruins of the former fortress installations, which once stood on this strategically important point. Thanks to these fortifications, the Counts of Gorizia were able to repel attacks in 1252 and the Turks in 1478. It was only in 1813 that the French blew up all the defensive installations. Following the description of route 2, you march to Kalvarienberg. From here, a forest path continues uphill (Sa1 castle hiking trail) to the first ruins and information boards. After about 40 minutes of walking, you reach the highest point of the hike and shortly thereafter the Herzbad and the water treading basin. From here, a wide service road leads the hiker back to Kalvarienberg. The viewpoint at the Kalvarienberg church invites you to rest briefly before returning to Sachsenburg via the venerable stone steps.
