On the adventure trail Juralandschaft to the Schulerloch
We start the hike at the parish church in Essing. From here the path leads us past the charming marketplace of the town and over species-rich dry grasslands to the karst spring of the Blautopf. After a short descent and passing the Weihermühl chapel, we reach the Tatzelwurm Bridge, which swings elegantly over the Altmühl and the Main-Danube Canal. This impressive structure, for a long time the longest wooden bridge in Europe, brings us to the opposite side of the valley, where we follow the shady hiking trail to the Klausenhöhlen caves. After a short detour to the caves, once multi-level dwellings of Stone Age people, we continue on beautiful paths to the road bridge at Heidenstein. We cross the river and soon stroll on the embankment that separates the Old Ludwig Canal from the New Main-Danube Canal through a magnificent avenue downstream.
