On the Westweg from Feldberg to Belchen
Walter Biselli
One of the most beautiful hikes in the Black Forest follows the Westweg from the highest summit, the Feldberg, to the highest located guesthouse in Baden-Württemberg on the Belchen.
The challenging day stage on the Westweg of the Black Forest Association runs consistently above 1000 m above sea level and offers varied views and shaded sections. Numerous guesthouses invite you to stop along the way.
On the Seebuck (1448 m), the second highest peak of the Black Forest, a monument made of rubble stone honors Chancellor Bismarck. In good weather, the ascent to the nearby observation tower is worthwhile. From the viewing platform on the Feldberg summit, between the weather station and the old Feldberg tower, we enjoy a unique panoramic view around.
From the 1414 m high summit of the Belchen, the fourth highest in the Black Forest, a panoramic view awaits in good visibility from the Vosges over the Swiss Jura to the Alps.

Roadbook
From the bus stop at the Hotel Feldbergerhof, we ascend towards the mountain station to the Seebuck.
Passing over the Grüblesattel and by the SWR transmission tower, we reach the summit of the Feldberg, the highest point in Germany north of the Alps (1493 m).
On the descent to the Stübenwasen, to the right lies the St. Wilhelmer Hut, down to the left the Todtnauer Hut. The treeless Stübenwasen (1386 m) is the fifth highest mountain of the Black Forest and offers a wide view into the Große Wiesental and to our day's destination, the Belchen.
Along the way, the Stübenwasen Guesthouse invites you to stop for refreshments.
For the next six kilometers, the trail descends continuously through the forest to the Notschrei pass. The name of this pass originates from the urgent petition by the communities of the Upper Wiesental at the beginning of the 19th century, requesting the construction of a road connection to the Breisgau.
Back in the forest, a short ascent leads up to Trubelsmattkopf (1226 m), followed immediately by a descent to the pass height Wiedener Eck (1035 m), the lowest point of the stage. This sequence repeats with Heidstein (1194 m) and the Krinne saddle (1117 m).
Those with sufficient stamina can climb directly to the Belchen summit from here. For a multi-day hike, an alternative is to hike to the valley station of the Belchen cable car in Multen and continue the summit tour the following day.
From here, the first 270 meters of elevation to Belchenhaus can be covered on foot via switchbacks, or comfortably by gondola up to the summit of Belchen.
