Starting from the idyllic Heldra (in Hesse), you cross the Werra to the border of Thuringia. For the partially steep ascent to and descent from the Heldrastein, hiking poles are recommended. The hike partly follows the former patrol road of the GDR border troops, making the division of Germany vividly tangible. At the Heldrastein, newspaper articles at the "Tower of Unity" recall the time before the fall of the Berlin Wall up to the dismantling of the border installations.
A scenically charming and historically interesting hike.
