Hohenneuffen castle and Albtrauf - I have to go there!
Günther Weinert
... and this is what you will experience there: Hohenneuffen castle, magnificent viewpoints, a former volcanic vent, Höllenlöcher, a walkable cave where Stone Age people once lived, a structure from Celtic times, the astronomy trail, nice rest areas and much more.
A pleasurable hike for the whole family was published on May 20, 2017, in the Stuttgarter Nachrichten.
Varied circular hike without large altitude differences along the Albtrauf and across the Swabian Alb plateau with lots of views.
The hike impresses with a variety of scenic and cultural features. The star of the hike is, however, Hohenneuffen castle. One of the most popular excursion destinations on the Albtrauf with magnificent panoramic views.

Roadbook
- You follow the hiking sign "red triangle on white background" (Swabian Alb northern edge path; HW 1) south. The first destination is a viewpoint with a magnificent view of the mighty Hohenneuffen castle, which is also the west launch site of the Hohenneuffen dragon-/paragliding club.
- Just a short distance further, there is a vegetated funnel in a meadow where a small pond forms when it rains. It is a former volcanic vent that formed due to volcanic activity 15 million years ago.
- The next geological highlight is the Höllenlöcher (Hell Holes). These are the deep gullies that run along the Albtrauf. Rocks loosen and fall into the valley. This process causes the Albtrauf to retreat backwards. Shortly after the Höllenlöcher and after the fork "Beim Molachsee," briefly leave HW1 and continue straight. After a left turn, you reach the next landscape gem.
- The Barnberg cave is located slightly below the Albtrauf. When determining your position, pay attention to the information board along the path. The dry cave is 46 meters long and served as a dwelling place for Stone Age humans. According to the information board, tools from the Old Stone Age were found in 1933. A steep side path leads down to the cave entrance. A flashlight is advisable.
- At the “Blauer Rank Hut,” you can shorten the hike if you go directly from the shelter hut to the astronomy trail heading east towards the quarry. The "red triangle" leads you further to the Heidengraben, a Celtic defensive wall from between 200 and 100 BC…
- … and then further to the Hülbener Brille, a metal installation of a bent oversized pair of glasses. From here you have a beautiful view of the castle and the Albtrauf. The “glasses” mark the turning point of the circular route. Go back, then turn right towards the country road where the Hochholz hiking parking lot is located.
- The astronomy trail begins at the hiking parking lot. Walk the astronomy trail, a dirt path paved with concrete slabs, straight across the plateau northwards. At the small Sikinger oak, our hiking trail makes a detour first to the right, then perpendicular to the left, and then leads you further to the road. After crossing the road (watch out for traffic!), you encounter the Albtrauf again and the "red triangle" (HW 1), which will lead you back to the hiking parking lot.
- Along the way, you will come across two great viewpoints. The first viewpoint is also the northern launch site for the paragliders. The second viewpoint shows the Hohenneuffen castle in all its glory. This rock is a bit hidden. Danger of falling!
- They say the best comes last, and so the leisurely ascent to an impressive Swabian structure, Hohenneuffen castle, begins.
The circular hike "Kohlberg - To the Biotopes on Floriansberg and Jusi" is closely connected to this route and leads to two former volcanoes of the Swabian Alb. Link:
