Hier, auf einer Höhe von fast 800 m über dem Meeresspiegel, beginnt die Reise eines der wichtigsten und schönsten Flüsse Deutschlands. Die Werra tritt hier ihre fast 300 km lange Reise an, bevor sie sich bei Hannoversch Münden mit der Fulda zur Weser vereinigt und schließlich bei Bremerhaven in die Nordsee fließt. Die Quelle am Fuße des Eselsberges bei Fehrenbach wurde 1897 eingefasst und am 14. August des folgenden Jahres feierlich eingeweiht. Man bezeichnet sie auch als Schrödersche Quellfassung nach Förstermeister Georg Schröder aus dem benachbarten Heubach. Die Maurerarbeiten wurden seinerzeit von Elias Traut aus Fehrenbach durchgeführt. Beide Herren sind heute mit Gedenktafeln an der Fassung verewigt. Seit damals fließt das Wasser unermüdlich durch den Rachen eines Löwenhauptes. 2006 wurde die Quelle umfangreich saniert. Von der Quelle stammt übrigens auch das Taufwasser, welches bei der Inbetriebnahme des Bombardier CityLiner Flugzeuges CRJ 700 "Eschwege" verwendet wurde. Direkt an der Werraquelle befindet sich ein kleines, gemütliches Wirtshaus das zu einer Rast einlädt. Neben Thüringer Spezialitäten und hausgebackenen Kuchen wird Ihnen auch das Lebenselixier, in Form des "Werraquelltröpfchen" gereicht.
