Valentin was allegedly a goose herder, but the support from affluent citizens enabled him to attend school and study. In order to allow all children in similar situations to attend school, he founded the foundation that still exists today, which his wife Magarete entrusted to the city after his death. Even today, every schoolchild in Dürkheim receives a Veltens-Weck on Valentine's Day. The fountain and facility are made of shell limestone and sandstone, and are a mix of Historicism, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco.
