Town hall fountain (1989)
Mathias Nikolaus, Bad Dürkheim
The town hall was originally a winery. The sandstone fountain therefore establishes a link to viticulture. The stele is an image of an oversized grape blossom, with four vine leaves at its base catching the falling water. The ensemble symbolises the importance of wine for Bad Dürkheim as one of the largest wine-growing communities in Germany. The town's coat of arms and three important dates in its history are carved into the sandstone: 778, first documented mention as Thurinchheim in the Lorsch Codex; 1360, granting of the town charter; 1905, granting of the title ‘Bad’.
This fountain shows the harmonious combination of water and wine in a special way.
This art object is stop no. 11 on the cultural tour signpost.
The artist is represented by other works in Bad Dürkheim (stations 4, 5, 6, 13, 14, 27, 36, 42, 44).
