Historical:
In honor of forester Karl Johann Gayer, born in 1822, died in 1907, the place was established by the Drachenfels Club in 1874 and the fountain was constructed. Restoration of the square took place in 1977, and a renovation of the fountain was necessary in 2003. As part of these works, a seating area was set up in 2002.
Gayer studied civil engineering and natural sciences, became chief forester and deputy district forest master of the Palatinate. In 1855, he was a lecturer at the Central Forest Training Institute in Aschaffenburg and from 1878 to 1892, he was a full professor at the University of Munich. His ecological forest management theory and his advocacy for mixed forests were reflected in his works from 1880 (“Forest Management”) and 1886 (“The Mixed Forest”). These teachings were incorporated into the State Forest Law and are still in use today. His office was located at the current inn ADMIRAL in Weisenheim am Berg between 1851 and 1855.
