Fountain on the Römerplatz (1992)
Mathias Nikolaus, Bad Dürkheim
The ‘Ruß - or Rusterbrunnen’ fountain was located on today's Römerplatz in the early Middle Ages. The first Dürkheim town hall was built on the same site in 1495. At that time, the centre of the town's organisation was called ‘Römer’ (Roman) and the square's current name refers to this. The connection to the old administrative building is represented by the coats of arms attached to the stele. They show Bad Dürkheim and its five incorporations: The town's coat of arms, which was granted to the Knights of Dürkheim, underwent several stylistic changes over the centuries. The coats of arms of Ungstein, Leistadt, Hardenburg, Grethen and Seebach follow in an anti-clockwise direction.
With his work in sandstone and bronze, Dürkheim artist Mathias Nikolaus wants to remind us of a medieval fountain. Here, water flows into the outer basin through three bronze spouts, which are symbolically intended to provide water for everyone.
