Beautifully designed historic square of the City of Rodalben.
Historic square of the city Rodalben opposite the former "Gallows Meadows" at the entrance of the Lindersbach Valley, featuring a cozy seating area and an old tunnel behind it. Here, the former "Poor Sinner Fountain" has been newly erected. At this fountain, those sentenced to death in the Middle Ages - partly for simple offenses like theft due to hunger - received one last "cool drink" before being executed. A newly built archway made of old stones, with a kneeling figure bowing her head to her sad fate beneath it, symbolically represents the gateway to the city. The sculpture was created by the Rodalben artist Stephan Müller, whose studio is located at Pfarrstraße 20 (www.ateliermueller-rodalben.de). He brings such a miscreant into focus, illustrating an ignoble piece of history while simultaneously making connections to the present. The massive stone block, from which the figure was ultimately created, comes from the former quarry at Hirschbrunnen between Rodalben and Münchweiler on the Rodalb and was extracted using drilled splitting wedges. Using a grinder and drill, and fine details with hammer and chisel, the artist then worked on the stone. In his sense, the overall artwork spans the arc from the past into the present. Thus, it denounces similar grievances that still exist in some parts of the world today and serves as a memorial for the appreciation of law and justice.

Free parking is available in the parking lot opposite (corner of Haupt-/Pirmasenser Straße) - where the Bear Cave Tour of the Gräfensteiner Land begins and ends - as well as on Lindersbachstraße.
