At the crossing from Hinterthal to Dienten, on the so-called Filz, there was once a lonely house where an old woman lived all alone and abandoned. When she died, the building remained empty and over the years it fell into disrepair. One stormy winter evening, a hunter once wandered across the Filz. It began to rummage violently and so he was glad when he saw the ruin looming in front of him in the twilight. He went in, looked for the kitchen, which was still halfway preserved, lit a fire in the cooker and hung up his coat and shoes to dry. Suddenly a woman stepped into the room. The hunter realised to his horror that it was the long-dead owner. She fussed with the dishes and finally began to cook. The hunter hardly dared to breathe for fear, but the old woman turned to him and said, "Would you like some mush?" The hunter was so hungry that he forgot his fear and asked to be allowed to eat. The mush smelled delicious and he sat down at the table to eat the tasty dish. Then he noticed that the mush had turned completely black on one side, while it looked deliciously golden on the other. Where should he start eating? But because he was a modest man, he spooned the burnt part first and ate the golden yellow rest last. Meanwhile, the mysterious woman watched him in silence, but when he had finished, a transfigured smile crossed her face and she spoke: "If you had done it the other way round or even left the burnt part, your life would have been over and I would have broken your neck. But now I am redeemed." After she had spoken these words, she got up, walked out into the dark, stormy night and has not been seen since. The hunter, however, left the house in a hurry and was glad to get away from the scene of the eerie events in one piece.
