Sarviniemi is a family-friendly day trip destination located in Taipalsaari, the other Salpauselkä. Sarviniemi is a narrow promontory shaped by the ice age, which offers a fascinating camping environment with its pine forests and sandy beaches. You can arrive in Sarviniemi, for example, by boat or bicycle ferry aboard M/S Rasti. Sarviniemi has invested in accessibility: The site has accessible hiking trails, footbridges to campfire sites, and toilets. You can get to the port along a gravel road, and an easy-to-go path starts from the maintenance/toilet building to the tip of Suuri Sarviniemi, where there is an accessible viewing platform. Maintenance of the area is scheduled
It is worth noting that you are not allowed to spend the night in Sarviniemi. between May and October.
I woke up from my nap to a thunderous noise, but it wasn’t a thunderstorm. It was a ship, so I quickly dived into hiding and peered from a safe distance to see what kind of ship was coming. The ship turned out to be Rasti, a red bike ferry, on its way towards Sarviniemi Harbour, with people on board with their vehicles. I knew the vehicles were called bicycles, and I loved them because they were quiet and you didn’t have to be afraid of them. They didn’t make a horrible noise or leave behind splashes of that nasty stuff called oil. Mother told me there was another bike ferry named after the ringed seals on Lake Saimaa. I had never seen that one... but wait, what’s that on the wall of this bike ferry? A picture of a ringed seal! I wonder if Nestori posed for that picture, too. My great uncle must be the world’s most famous ringed seal!
