GeoPunkt Schindeltalschrofen
Den Schindeltafschrofen prägen steile Felshänge, bizarre Türmchen und mächtige Schuttablagerungen. Diese Formen und Ablagerungen sind charakteristisch für den Hauptdolomit. Der Hauptdolomit ist ein bis zu 1.000 Meter dickes Gesteinspaket und das am weitesten verbreitete Gestein in den Bayerischen Alpen. Typisch ist seine brüchige Struktur und entsprechend starke Zerklüftung. Dadurch ist der Hauptdolomit verwitterungsanfällig und bildet große Schuttfächer wie hier am Schindeltalschrofen.
Der Hauptdolomit wurde vor etwa 232 bis 215 Millionen Jahren im Gezeitenbereich eines Meeres, vergleichbar mit dem Wattenmeer, abgelagert.
