The waterfall, with its drop of 143 m. it is the highest in Europe and the truly suggestive path that runs alongside it is a stretch of the merchant road of the Gries which has linked Milan and Bern for centuries.

The suggestive waterfall is fed by the Toce river which forms in the Riale plain from the confluence of the Hosand, Gries, Rhoni streams. Its history is closely linked to the history of romantic and pioneering mountaineering exploration begun by "De Saussure" in 1777 and continued by Reverend Coolidge, by the Swiss scholar Gottlier Studer, by Arthur Cust, the father of ski mountaineering and by the Milanese Riccardo Gerla defined as "the apostle of Ossola” together with the faithful guide of Antronapiana Lorenzo Marani. The Toce waterfall was visited and loved by numerous illustrious visitors such as Richard Wagner, Gabriele D'Annunzio, Queen Margherita, King Vittorio Emanuele III, Giosuè Carducci and by Abate Antonio Stoppani who have left enthusiastic descriptions of what was already defined as the most beautiful waterfall in the Alps. On the top, a spectacular observation point is the wooden balcony stretched out over the waterfall. The Toce Waterfall, for intuitive production needs, is visible in its majesty only for short periods during the year.
