Das maritime Seezeichen ist ein beliebtes Fotomotiv auf dem Deich direkt beim Weser-Strandbad.
An der Küste spielen Gezeiten und Wasserstände eine entscheidende Rolle in der Schifffahrt und im täglichen Leben – und genau hier setzt dieses faszinierende technische Denkmal an. Der Wasserstandsanzeiger am Weserdeich ist weit mehr als nur ein historisches Messinstrument; er ist ein markantes Wahrzeichen maritimer Ingenieurskunst und ein beliebtes Fotomotiv direkt am Weser-Strandbad. Schon von Weitem zieht die ungewöhnliche Konstruktion die Blicke auf sich. Seit jeher ist die präzise Kenntnis des Wasserstandes für die Schifffahrt überlebenswichtig war.

Der Wasserstandsanzeiger wurde von der Geestemünde Eisengießerei und Maschinenfabrik Möhlen & Seebeck 1903 installiert und bis 1973 betrieben. Er besteht aus einem Gittermast mit Rahe und Stange und zeigt in Tages- und Nachtsignalen die gezeitenabhängigen Strömungsrichtungen, die Wasserstände in Meter (1 Meter = 1 Ball) und 20-Zentimeterstufen (20 cam = 1 Kegel) an. Das dazugehörige Aufenthalts- und Dienstgebäude, 1942 erweitert und 1952 neu errichtet, dient in den Sommermonaten als Kiosk.

Wegen der Einführung modernerer elektronischer Mess- und Meldeverfahren wurde der Anzeiger 1973 außer Dienst genommen, 1976 aber renoviert und zeigte bis 1990 Schifffahrtsbehinderungen und Fahrwassersperrungen an. Aber auch wegen seines mittlerweile anerkannten historischen Werts blieb der Anzeiger erhalten und steht seit Anfang der 1980er Jahre unter Denkmalschutz. Bis 1996 wurde der Anzeiger vom Wasser- und Schifffahrtsamt Bremerhaven unterhalten, seit 1998 gehört er zu den Außenexponaten des Deutschen Schifffahrtsmuseums. 2003 erfolgte eine durchgreifende Restaurierung, die den ursprünglichen Signalbetrieb wieder in Gang setzte.

Der Standort könnte kaum besser gewählt sein: Direkt auf dem Deich gelegen, bietet sich Besuchenden nicht nur der Blick auf die historische Technik, sondern auch eine herrliche Aussicht über die Weser. Hier lässt sich wunderbar beobachten, wie die großen Schiffe vorbeiziehen, während man die frische Brise genießt.
