The 7.5-meter-high replica of a medieval watchtower, located within the district of Ohmbach, was built in 2005 below the 375-meter-high vantage point known as “Wartenstein.”
According to local tradition, an ancient stone watchtower is believed to have once stood on the prominent hilltop between the Ohmbach and Kohlbach valleys. In the Middle Ages, watchtowers served as lookout and signaling posts. From the elevated site of Wartenstein, one had a wide view of the surrounding area, allowing early warnings of approaching danger. There was also a direct line of sight from here to the nearby imperial castle in Kübelberg.
Today, the topographical advantages of the hilltop are still being utilized. In addition to a water reservoir, a mobile phone transmitter has been installed on the Wartenstein in recent years. The watchtower now serves as a historical waypoint for hikers on the Diamantschleifer-Weg (Diamond Cutter’s Trail).
The observation tower is open to visitors all year round.
