The Lewitz fish ponds were artificially created in the 19th century. On a water surface of about 900 ha and with a depth of 1.20 m, they are mainly used for carp breeding. At the edge of the ponds there is an observation tower, directly at the Dütschower bridge. From here visitors can observe the diverse bird life of the Lewitz such as white-tailed eagles, peregrine falcons, gray herons, egrets and many more. A visit is worthwhile at any time of year - but it is most beautiful during the bird migration, when numerous migratory birds rest on the fish ponds and create an unforgettable spectacle.
Every year in autumn the lakes are drained to harvest the carp. The fishing of the ponds is always celebrated as a big festival on the first weekend of November. Then the guests can immediately take home the fresh fish.
