Viewing rock "Alter Söll"

The historic place of origin of the town of Schöneck is the "Alte Söll", which today serves as a popular viewing point. Exposed parts of an archway bear witness to earlier history, and at the foot of the former mountain estate there are two beer cellars from the 14th century. The rock was the site of Schöneck Castle and consists of greywacke quartzite. In 1580 parts of the castle were demolished due to dilapidation and a hunting lodge was built. After the fire of 1761, the remains of the castle were demolished and used to rebuild the city. Extensive renovation work was completed in 2012. The rock was cleared of trees and bushes and the remains of the wall were uncovered. In addition, the viewing platform was renewed and information boards were set up. From the rock, at 734m above sea level, you get a wonderful panoramic view of the Elstergebirge in the south, the Fichtelgebirge in the west and the Thuringian Forest in the north-west. If the view is clear and you have a good eye, you should have seen the Monument to the Battle of the Nations in Leipzig. In winter, the "Alter Söll" is not accessible. For our little visitors there is the adventure playground "Burg Schöneck" at the foot of the "Alten Söll".
