New: Every Friday at 6:00 p.m., there is a guided tour of the tower in Polish.
The tower was first mentioned in 1378. In the 16th century, it was expanded by the city architect Stieglitzer. After being struck by lightning in 1742, the tower was raised once more and crowned with a Baroque dome by master mason Suckert. The clocks on the tower are a particularly striking feature; they were crafted by Bartholomäus Scultetus, who served as mayor for many years.
Several Görlitz legends surround the town hall tower.
One story tells of the golden town hall lion: In ancient times, the lion roared every day at midnight to scare off thieves and vagrants. At some point, it roared so loudly that women and children were frightened, whereupon the roaring was stopped. Today, the lion roars only on command.
Another legend explains why the warrior’s head on the lowest clock wiggles his chin every minute and why his eyes glow in the dark: Centuries ago, the tower guard is said to have been walled up alive in the tower because he slept through a city fire. Every full minute, he opens his eyes. The city fire is said to be reflected in his glowing orange eyes. Full of astonishment, his mouth opens as if he were saying something, but people cannot understand him.
New: Every Friday at 6:00 p.m., a guided tour of the tower is held in Polish.
