Place famous for having seen the battle between the French of Louis XV and the Savoyard army of Carlo Emanuele III on 19 July 1747.
The battle had the aim of taking over the Assietta crest and the Colle delle Finestre, fundamental peaks to lay siege to the military fortifications still present today. It was a carnage with over 5,000 dead on the field (mainly French defeated in the clash with Piedmontese troops). A large stone obelisk surmounted by a bronze eagle (symbol of the Italian Alpine Club) has been placed on the summit of the mountain since 1882 as a reminder of the battle. A few meters away, a stele commemorates the French general Belle-Isle, who died fighting there. A dirt road, the Assietta road, leads right up to the top; from there the summit can be reached in a few minutes via a short path.
