Der Schwalbenstein ist ein Felsen im Thüringer Wald, der gerne von Johann Wolfgang von Goethe aufgesucht wurde, wenn er in Ilmenau weilte. Hier schrieb der Dichterfürst am 19. März 1779 den IV. Akt der Iphigenie, worauf eine am Felsen angebrachte Tafel hinweist. Heute steht auf dem Felsen eine kleine Wanderhütte mit herrlicher Aussicht ins Ilmtal. Der unweit des Waldgasthofs Schöffenhaus liegende Schwalbenstein ist ein beliebtes Wanderziel und eine Zwischenstation auf dem beliebten Goethewanderweg. Es lohnt sich aber auch eine circa 6 km lange Rundwanderung, die man vom Schwalbenstein bzw. vom Waldgasthof Schöffenhaus zum Waldgasthof Mönchhof, von dort zum Aussichtsturm Hohe Warte und wieder zurück zum Waldgasthof Schöffenhaus unternehmen kann.
