Die Burg Birseck bei Arlesheim wurde von den Grafen von Frohburg an Basel veräussert. Bischhof Heinrich von Neuenburg, vom Papst nach Rom vorgeladen, zitiert den Heiligen Vater um 1270 auf die Feste Birseck. Im 18. Jahrhundert verlegt Karl von Andlau den Landvogteisitz von der Burg ins Dorf, wo er den Andlauerhof bezieht. Seither ist die Burg unbewohnt. Während der Revolutionszeit wird es von betrunkenen Bauern in Brand gesteckt. 1808 baut der Sohn des letzten Landvogts, Konrad von Andlau, die Burg im romanischen Stil wieder auf.
