Aus der engen Burgenkette vom Rhein zum Jurablauen ragt die Ruine Dorneck wegen der Ausdehnung der Anlage und der historischen Bedeutung in besonderem Masse hervor. Ihr Ursprung und das Gründergeschlecht bleiben Vermutung. Auf Grund der Keramikfunde muss schon im 11. Jahrhundert eine Burg bestanden haben. 1360 verkaufte Graf Sigmund II von Thierstein-Farnsburg seine «Burg ze Tornegg» mit allem Zubehör an Herzog Rudolf IV von Österreich und empfing sie als Erblehen zurück. 1384 sah sich die Witwe Sigmunds gezwungen, ihrem Lehensherrn, Herzog Leopold, ausser der Burg das halbe Dorf Dornach und das Dörfchen Gempen zu veräussern. Aber auch Österreich vermochte den neu erworbenen Besitz nicht zu halten. Schon nach zehn Jahren verpfändete Herzog Leopold IV die Burg Dorneck dem Basler Bürger Henman «dem Efringer». In der Folge teilten sich die Efringer mit den Grafen von Thierstein die Herrschaft Dorneck. 1485 erwarb Solothurn in geschickten Verhandlungen von Bernhard von Efringen «die burg genant Dornegk». Zwei Jahre später einigten sich Solothurn und die Grafen von Thierstein dahin, dass die Stadt die Burg für sich allein besitze, die Gerichte zu Dornach und Gempen jedoch von beiden Partnern im Kondominat ausgeübt werden sollten. Erst 1502, nach dem Schwabenkrieg, verkauften die verschuldeten Thiersteiner ihren Anteil an Solothurn. Während der folgenden 300 Jahre residierten nacheinander 60 Vögte auf Dorneck. Die Burg blieb – im Gegensatz zu den andern solothurnischen Landvogteisitzen – bis zu ihrem Untergang 1798 eine Festung, die beträchtlich ausgerüstet war und bei allen Bedrohungen der Grenze vom Rhein und vom Elsass her eine verstärkte Besatzung erhielt.


Es lohnt sich, bis zur Galerie aufzusteigen und die Panoramasicht zu geniessen (Mitte November bis Mitte März geschlossen). Vor und um das Areal sind Feuerstellen vorhanden.
