Der «rote Büffel» war 1993 Philippe Kohlbrenners Antwort auf die Emmentaler Hügel.

Auf der Krete oberhalb Heimiswil findet sich der Weiler Rotenbaum. Die erhobene Lage motivierte den damaligen Bewohner Philippe Kohlbrenner zur Entwicklung eines Elektrovelos. Aus ersten Basteleien entstand nach und nach der bekannte FLYER und damit ein veritabler Boom. Philippe Kohlbrenner tüftelte übrigens weiter und stellt heute im Emmental das E-Bike «SpeedPed» her.
