The Queich meadows near Offenbach an der Queich are known for their traditional meadow irrigation, which has been recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage.
This method utilises gravity for irrigation and promotes diverse flora and fauna. Originally used to secure yields and control pests, it now contributes to ecological diversity. From the Middle Ages to the present day, this technique has proved its worth, with water being channelled into irrigation ditches through weirs. The return of the white stork in particular emphasises the importance of this sustainable practice.
At the Rhineland-Palatinate Stork Centre, an interactive functional model clearly demonstrates the technology and operation of meadow irrigation. The Queich meadows are open to the public and can be explored independently. However, to find out more about the practice of meadow irrigation and the special flora and fauna, a guided excursion is recommended. Dates can be found in the calendar of the Queichwiesen interest group.
