Piatra Despicată (“The Split Rock”) in Roșia Montană is a striking natural monument nestled between Cârnic Hill and Cetății Hill, right in the heart of the Apuseni Mountains. Composed of andesite, the rock was formed by ancient tectonic and volcanic forces millions of years ago. Separated from the surrounding land, it creates a dramatic and mysterious landscape.
A local legend speaks of a giantess who dropped the huge rock, which cracked in two upon hitting the earth. Today, it’s a popular tourist attraction for geology lovers, hikers, and those intrigued by the ancient myths of the Apuseni region.
