Die Station Ospizio Bernina auf dem Berninapass bildet mit 2253 m ü. M. den höchsten Punkt der Berninastrecke und liegt direkt am Lago Bianco.

Dieser sorgt dafür, dass die Rhätische Bahn dank hundert Prozent Wasserkraft nachhaltig unterwegs ist. Es sind die Wasserkraftwerke in der Valposchiavo, die den Strom für den Betrieb der Bahnen liefern. Im Zuge der Verlängerung der Berninabahn von Pontresina nach Poschiavo im Jahr 1910 erfolgte der Bau des Ospizio Bernina bzw. des damals noch auf Deutsch benannten Bernina Hospizes. Als Architekt engagierte man Nicolaus Hartmann, den Sohn des gleichnamigen und ebenfalls bekannten Architekten, der mit seinen Bauten das Engadin architektonisch mitprägte. Nebst dem Ospizio Bernina und dem Bahnhofsgebäude der Alp Grüm entwarf er auch die Herz-Jesu-Kirche in Samedan, das Museo Segantini in St. Moritz, sowie mehrere Hotels, Stations- und Verwaltungsgebäude.
