A walled complex with a terrible past: in earlier times, those sentenced to death were publicly executed here with the sword or on the gallows. Why were the places of execution built outside the town? There was a special reason for this: for the condemned, it was like walking from the prison to the place of execution. Curious people lined the streets to get one last glimpse of the person whose life was about to end.
Fortunately, this is now a thing of the past and you have a marvellous view of Marburg and the Landgrave's Palace from the place of execution. The Bismarck Promenade leads past it and invites you to take a leisurely stroll.
