For centuries, trading has taken place around the Mainz Cathedral. By the time the construction of the cathedral began around 975, the square must have developed into the most important trading place for goods in Mainz. Today, the stalls are spread out over the marketplace and Liebfrauenplatz, between the cathedral and the reconstructed facades of the colorful market houses.
You can find fresh fruit and vegetables from the region, flowers, and many seasonal items here. In the particularly busy months, 20 to 30 additional daily stalls are added. Get yourself a Mainz meat sausage with a bread roll, a coffee from a local roastery, or sit in one of the cafés around the square and watch the happenings at the market for a while.
On Saturdays, many continue to the market breakfast at Fischtorplatz, Tritonplatz, or Schillerplatz. Because a wine spritzer from the Mainz winemakers is simply a must-have for a real market Saturday.

The Mainz weekly market – one of the most beautiful in all of Germany – invites visitors to shop, stroll, and enjoy in a special atmosphere. The blend of historic backdrop and regional diversity makes the market a popular meeting point for locals and guests.

During the high season, the selection is expanded by 20 to 30 additional daily stalls, ensuring seasonal specialties like asparagus, strawberries, or grapes also have their regular place.
Mainz Market Breakfast – Enjoyment in Good Company
A special experience is the Mainz Market Breakfast, which takes place on Saturdays from March to November. In a relaxed atmosphere, visitors can enjoy “Weck, Worscht, und Woi” and taste wines from the Mainz winemakers. Due to construction work, the market breakfast will not take place at Liebfrauenplatz until approximately 2030. Instead, it will be offered from 9 AM to 3 PM at various locations in close proximity to the weekly market:
-
Tritonplatz: Centrally located near the Mainz theaters, with wine and food from the market stalls at Gutenbergplatz.
-
Fischtorplatz: Market breakfast with a view of the Rhine and maritime flair.
-
Schillerplatz: Around the Carnival Fountain. Nearby restaurants invite visitors to refuel.
