Nahe der Stadt Bad Neuenahr erhebt sich die Landskrone, eine Felskuppe im unteren Ahrtal. Am Westhang des Naturschutzgebietes steht die heute denkmalgeschützte Maria-Hilf-Kapelle. Die Wald- und Weinhänge lassen sich hervorragend während einer Wanderung entlang der kleinen Pfade erkunden. Der gut angelegte Wanderweg führt durch idyllische Waldabschnitte und bietet auf dem Gipfel angekommen, einen unvergleichlichen Panoramablick über die Stadt Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler und die umliegenden Weinberge.
Im Jahr 1205 befahl der Staufer Philipp von Schwaben, ein bedeutender Nachkomme des legendären Kaisers Barbarossa, den Bau einer Burg auf dem "Mons Gimiche". Nachdem er die Gegend in Betracht genommen hatte, soll er die Worte ausgesprochen haben: "Das ist ja des Landes Krone". Fortan erhielt die Burg den passenden Namen "Landskrone".
Die strategische Positionierung an der Einmündung des Ahrtals und in der Nähe der Kaiserstraße Aachen-Frankfurt machte die Landskrone im Mittelalter zu einem begehrten und umkämpften Objekt. Während des 30-jährigen Krieges wurde die Festung mehrfach belagert und im Jahr 1677 fiel sie einem verheerenden Brand zum Opfer. Als Folge dieser Ereignisse ordnete Herzog Wilhelm von Pfalz-Neuburg im Jahr 1682 die nahezu vollständige Sprengung der Burg an.
