Das Kieferle ist der Hausberg des Neuhäuser Ortsteils Steinheid. Mit seinen 868 m ü NN ist es der höchste Berg im Südthüringer Schiefergebirge. Von 1962 bis 1991 wurde hier von der damaligen Sowjetarmee eine Radarstation betrieben. 2006 wurden deren letzte Hinterlassenschaften abgerissen. Inzwischen hat sich die Natur die Bergspitze zurückerobert. Einige Meter unterhalb des Gipfels - am 6-Kuppen-Steig gelegen - steht eine Schutzhütte. Von hier hat man einen herrlichen Ausblick in das Coburger Land, bis Masserberg, Frauenwald und Siegmundsburg sowie zum Oberbecken des Pumpspeicherwerkes Goldisthal.
