Für den Kanton Zürich war der Irchel im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert ein strategischer Teil des Hochwachten-Alarmsystems im Verbund mit 23 Hochwachten, die miteinander in Sichtkontakt standen. So konnte innerhalb von nur 15 Minuten durch Licht- oder Rauchsignale der ganze Kanton vor heranrückenden Feinden gewarnt werden.
Von der Hochwacht (668 m) können wir den weiten Blick über die Rheinschleife von Eglisau bis zur Klosterinsel Rheinau geniessen. Landschaftsprägend sind in Eglisau die Eisenbahnbrücke aus dem Jahre 1897 und die neue Rheinbrücke von 1919.
