Begehbarer Bergfels mit geschichtsträchtiger Höhle

Vom Kickelhahn führt der Goethewanderweg bergab zum Großen Hermannstein. Nach dem Aufstieg auf den Felsen werden Sie mit einem atemberaubenden Ausblick belohnt. Die Höhle im Felsen wurde künstlich ausgeschlagen und diente vermutlich im Mittelalter als Wachstube einer Burg, die sich auf dem Felsen befunden hat. Goethe suchte sie mehrfach auf, bezeichnet sie als: „(sie ist) mein geliebter Aufenthalt, wo ich möchte wohnen und bleiben". Hier hat Goethe gearbeitet und gezeichnet. Zu dieser Höhle führte er auch Frau von Stein, als sie ihn im Sommer 1776 in Ilmenau besuchte. Wo die Worte nicht reichten, ergänzte er sie durch Zeichnungen: von der Höhle im Hermannstein, von den dampfenden Tälern bei Ilmenau, vom Manebacher und Stützerbacher Grund. Einige dieser Zeichnungen können Sie im Museum Jagdhaus Gabelbach bewundern.
