The Greifensteine are a popular destination. Head up to the top of the rocks for panoramic views sweeping over the forests of the Greifenstein area.

A total of 162 steps lead up to the highest of the seven granite rocks that make up the Greifensteine. The stone steps and solidly built railed stairway help you on the way up to the 731m-high summit. The expansive view encompasses prominent elevations such as the Pöhlberg, the Fichtelberg and Augustusburg castle, and you can also see all the way to the Czech Republic. The viewpoint is open depending on weather conditions. In winter, when snow, ice, frost or strong winds occur, the viewpoint is generally closed.

Opening times

Access to the viewpoint is weather-dependent, but in any case only permitted in daylight. For safety reasons, it is closed in the event of snow and if there is any danger of slipping.

Public transport

The nearest bus stop is the “Weg zu den Greifensteinen, Ehrenfriedersdorf”, which is served by bus line 441 (Ehrenfriedersdorf-Schwarzenberg). Another option is the bus stop “Gasthof Teichschänke, Geyer” (bus line 441), which is right by the Greifenstein reservoir; from here you can follow a forest path to the Greifensteine.

In the town of Ehrenfriedersdorf itself, there is the bus stop “Neumarkt, Ehrenfriedersdorf”, bus line 210 (Chemnitz-Annaberg-Buchholz). Although this is 4 km from the Greifensteine, if you choose this option you will pass through a beautiful forest via the exciting Waldgeisterweg (Forest Spirits Trail).
